Letter to Ritchie Bates from Dominic Mobbs (well done Dominic!): Cr Richie Bates Councillor I am writing to express my severe dismay at the latest actions of the Cairns Regional Council (CRC) relating to the above topic which are apparently fully supported by our local councillor, you. As way of background I had no firm views and only passing interest in this issue until as part of the alleged ‘public consultation’ my wife and I visited the so-called ‘Information Office’ on the project at City Place. However rather than providing a good overall summary of the available options the woman in attendance was totally evasive, simply attempted to rail-road us towards supporting council’s preferred option and submitting a favourable survey form. She had no answer as to why if this was a true consultation process seeking accurate public opinion the non-preferred options had not been fully worked up with detailed diagrams and schematics. There was also no option for the possible retention and revitalisation of City Place with no traffic passing through City Place but with the bus terminus to be moved. This option to keep Lake St closed, leave the bus stops at City Place and simply move the bus terminus, say to Cairns Central, clearly should have been an available choice that the public could have expressed an opinion on. But no…it was obvious to us during this visit that some sort of ‘fix’ was on and the consultation exercise a charade. How right this proved to be when we subsequently saw the wording of the telephone survey and the subsequent ‘results’! Anyway this is history. But even this flawed telephone survey assured voters that if Lake St was opened it would be part of a general package to make the whole surrounding CBD area more attractive and pedestrian friendly. Now we learn from the Cairns Post this is not to happen. So as a result of your vote and support it appears we now getting the worst possible outcome…simply the demolition of City Place and the opening up of Lake St to traffic with no additional benefits whatsoever…unbelievable! Surely not? Can you please assure me that this is not in fact the case and that the “Heart of Shields St” will be constructed before City Place is demolished? Thankyou Regards Dominic Mobbs Parramatta Park
