Letter to the Editor Being a local, well I have been in this town for one year mostly, and have found it the most inhospitable town I have ever been to, when it comes to joining local clubs. I have bought two properties in town, and have had people actually say they do not believe a word I say in one club I joined. I have done 4 months voluntary Department of Conservation work also. Thank god I do not need a fulltime job, but cutback on some personal spending, but what about the others. . The only work I have been offered is actually laughable. I am a qualified secondary teacher, former local body councillor, successful human resource education consultant, and I have to say been offered one job tutoring 1.5 hours a night, for 3 nights in a row, and another job tutoring for two hours twice a week. The same has happened with relief teaching at one school, one hour in the morning and back for one hour in the afternoon. The local club I joined generated a rumour I was kicked out of the Auckland club of the same name, where I obtained a reference to say I had not, would you believe it? I have heard people come here for a few years and leave, and I think I maybe joining that group, and believe Invercargill is probably more me. There is no NZ music here, and having musicians on stage during the festival saying they were not paid and could they get some money, as a ratepayer I was disgusted. The festival was all about family really to the exclusion of the individual, not bad but this is a single person’s destination also and not all of us drink. I was so bored, the opening night was just so lame, and the closing carnival just a major disappointment, and the music did not engage me. New Plymouth hosts World of Music and Dance without a lot of trouble. There is no live music venue, the memorial hall has very bad accousitics, and the only place in town was closed down the Revolver Bar, so all New Zealand acts go to Dunedin and Invercargill, which are student towns. I have become isolated and am very negative about this place, and people who have been here for 8 years accept the clickiness, and the underlying racist views, oh and never mention the Treaty, my god what a nono. Maoris never settled here so it does not apply, well my goodness, you walk the Shotover and they discovered the gold. Say no more my name is withheld, and Auckland you are a welcome site with all your traffic problems for a few weeks, at least the Librarians are not being laid off, and Len Brown you look very progressive from the bottom end of the country. Oh and one last comment I am looking forward to Nicky Hagers book on money laundering, there are a lot of people throwing US dollars around this town, avoiding paying taxes, and many people leave other countries to not pay tax also, who reside here. I want to live in a community with a sense of community, not dog eat dog, vision. Queenstown central will turn into sterile shops of labels only with no individuality left, as the rents go up, another Surfers, just faceless Tourism, I finally get it I need a break.
