Letter to the editor I submitted this morning... Equal Opportunity for all Businesses: Congratulations to the city of Saint John for the recent announcement of your new TD Bank call center jobs. When I read the news, I was just a little jealous (coming from Moncton, as I do, I admit to being a little competitive), and excited that the provincial government had actually (according to initial reports) managed to create jobs without spending millions of hard-earned taxpayer dollars. Fast-forward 24 hours, and cue the inevitable crash down to earth. Turns out my optimism was premature, as those jobs came with a hefty price tag attached: 2 Million precious tax payer dollars, going to the 5th largest bank in Canada - a multi-billion dollar corporate giant. As if the banks don’t already get more than enough of our money. Premier Alward must be figuring it’s worth 2 million dollars to be able to stand proudly in front of our flag for a high-priced photo op. Meanwhile, small and medium sized businesses scratch and claw and sweat blood dealing with a heavy tax burden, mounds of red tape, and fees up the wazoo. Never mind they account for nearly ¾ of the jobs in this province. It’s high time to do away with corporate welfare, and get the politics out of job creation. Let’s implement a hiring tax credit for all new jobs, from the smallest Mon & Pop store to the biggest corporate enterprise, and put everyone on an even playing field.
