Liberia: 400 Suspended At AME University 7 JULY 2014 The African Methodist Episcope University or AMEU on Camp Johnson Road, Monrovia has suspended over four hundred graduating seniors of the university for two academic years for alleged financial fraud. A communication dated June 11, 2014 under the signature of the President of the African Methodist Episcopal University, Dr. Joseph Isaac, addressed to the affected students reads: Based on the results of the investigation conducted June 4-6, 2014 by the Special Committee on students registration fraud which occurred during the 2nd semester 2013-2014 registration, I have the obligation to notify you of your suspension for two academic semesters, including the current semester, for defrauding the university. You suspension takes immediate effect. The letter further states that the suspended students are required to settle all financial obligations to the university during the period of the suspension for the classes they attended and the knowledge acquired. At the end of the suspension, the students are also required to apply for readmission to the university, the letter concludes. However, the affected students have challenged the action of the administration on grounds that they were not part of the financial malpractices, terming the activities of the university as a witch hunt. The over 400 students subsequently wrote the Minister of Education on June 17, 2014, highlighting their grievances and disenchantment with what the school refers to as fraud during the registration process for academic year 2013/2014, whereby we have been unjustly suspended from our institution on a mere basis of allegations without proper investigation. We were made to understand by the university that the basis of such decision is predicated upon the results from an investigative committee victimizing almost 400 of us (graduating seniors), the letter said. According to the letter, initially to said investigation, they were asked to redeposit a hundred percent tuition payment. Consequently, in good faith, some of the students have paid the said amount, only to be finally rewarded with suspension letters. As graduating seniors of November, 2014, we were denied of taking our midterm examinations, alongside the ongoing pre-graduation exercise. Unlike others, who may have resolved to unlawful encounters, we, cognizant of our rights, have resolved to seek your kind timely intervention, essential to securing the interests of nearly 400 graduating seniors, deprived of their rights, the students communication with the Education Boss said. They urged the Education Minister, Madam Etmonia Tarpeh, to act promptly in pursuing the matter to a logical conclusion.
