Liberia Medical Council Opposes Health Workers Protest The Liberia Medical and Dental Council (LMDC) has opposed the strike action of Liberia’s health practitioners for salary increment, in the wake of the passage of the 2013/2014 National Budget. Addressing a press conference on Monday, July 29, 2013, LMDC newly elected president, Dr. John Mulbah said the current salaries of health workers is attractive unlike in the past. According to him, salary increment for health practitioners is a gradual process and does not require protest. He stated that LMDC recognizes the numerous contributions of health workers, but frowned on protest in the discharge of public duties. The LMDC boss pointed out that health profession calls for service to the nation and commitment in the wake of huge economic challenges. He stated that plans are underway for health workers salary to be increased. Dr. John warned against protest at the detriment of the masses. He said the LMDC under his leadership is focusing on how to provide quality health services to the citizenry of Liberia. Dr. Mulbah who specialized in pregnancy for three decades said plans are also underway to open professional medical institutions in Liberia. He warned against the opening of substandard medical institutions that do not meet international best practices. The LMDC boss said inspectors from the institution will regularly tour various medical facilities to ensure standard and professionalism. He cautioned political actors to inform the LMDC before opening medical centers in any part of Liberia. Dr. Mulbah threatened to close medical centers that are substandard and do not adhere to LMDC’s criteria before providing health services. He stated that quality and professional medical centers are necessary, rather than more health facilities that offer limited and unethical medical services. Speaking further, he said the council comprises of 13 members and five standing committees to regulate the operation of LMDC. He outlined the executive, examination& credential, disciplinary, education & training, and Finance, budget and planning committees. Dr. Mulbah said the Pharmacy Board, Physician Assistants& Allied worker, Midwives Association, Liberia Dental & Medical Association, among others. He re-affirmed the LMDC commitment in ensure quality and professional health services for Liberians and foreign nationals. Meanwhile, the government of Liberia through the Health Ministry has given health workers 60 days to address their plights.
