Liberia: Woewiyu Declares Intention for Grand Bassa Senatorial Race BY H. VASCO WIAGBE, 6 MARCH 2014 RELATED TOPICS Liberia Former Grand Bassa County Senator, Thomas Jucontee Woewiyu, has declared his intention to contest the Mid-Term Senatorial race for the county. Woewiyu said he wants to be Senator to perfect and complete the decentralization of Grand Bassa County, by ensuring that all political sub-divisions of the county are covered by law and justice. Addressing a news conference Monday in Paynesville, outside Monrovia, Woewiyu said if elected, he would ensure that the rights of all Bassonians to their ancestral land is not lost through unscrupulous political machination. According to the Liberia News Agency (LINA), he also indicated that he will ensure that Oil Block 13 and all other natural resources located in the county become a blessing and not a curse to the people of the county. Woewiyu added that if elected, he would also make sure that the county development fund, including the US$1million contributed by ArcelorMittal annually and contributions from other entities are well managed. He said the funds would be managed by a broader team comprising representatives of the Grand Bassa University Students Association, Traditional Leaders and the Bassa Council of Churches, among others. In another development, Woewiyu, an ex-spokesman of the defunct National Patriotic Front of Liberia (NPFL), has apologized to the Liberian people for the loss of innocent lives, lawlessness and the heinous crimes committed by individual Liberians and foreigners during the 14-year war. Woewiyu noted that the 14-year conflict in Liberia is regrettable as it contains the darkest page in the nations history. Although he felt short in mentioning names, Woewiyu pointed out that the madness was played out by various actors, including Liberians and foreigners for their selfish interests. He, however, said the he owes no apology to anyone for his involvement in the war which was initially a legitimate uprising against a brutal dictator, emphasizing it was necessary to rid the country of the evil of dictatorship.
