Librarian Jobs In Egypt And Career In Netherlands-Flemish Institute Vacancies In Cairo 2013 Librarian vacancy at the Netherlands-Flemish Institute in Cairo.The job also includes teaching on BA and MA level. VACANCY LIBRARIAN The Netherlands-Flemish Institute in Cairo (NVIC) is looking for a full-time librarian (m/f), starting from 1 December 2013. The library of the NVIC is an academic reference library. The goal of the library is to support academic research and the teaching programs of the NVIC in the fields of Arabic studies and Egyptology. However, the collection contains publications for a more generally interested public as well. The collection consists of publications in Arabic and European languages. The library specializes in the following subjects: Arabic and Islamic studies (with special focus on Egypt in all its aspects), Egyptology/Archaeology, Coptic studies, Papyrology and Graeco-Roman Egypt. The library contains a considerable collection of periodicals as well as Egyptian daily and monthly newspapers and magazines. Currently, NVIC is working to upgrade its electronic catalogue to GGC format (a Dutch library standard), in close cooperation with the Leiden University library. Main tasks 1.Curating the NVIC library collection. Tasks include: • Acquiring new books and magazines in consultation with the academic staff of the institute • Advising the academic staff on new publications, by keeping track of the developments in our fields of interest • Being in charge of the library budget and ensuring that expenses are kept within the budget • Advising the director about new developments, and preparing proposals for changes in library policies or systems • Cataloguing new acquisitions and maintaining the electronic database • Converting our electronic catalogue data to GGC format, checking and completing old records, and adding the collection to the University library collection • Making the collection accessible to users, receiving library visitors and informing them about library rules and systems • Maintaining contacts with relevant libraries and colleagues in Egypt and abroad 2.Teaching in our programs for Arabic and Islamic studies. Tasks include: • Teaching on BA and MA level. The subjects of your teaching will partly depend on your own expertise and interests • Preparing course material and exams in consultation with the other teachers and supervised by the director of the Arabic teaching programme • Participate and assist in the development of NVIC’s teaching programs • Offer assistance in our courses and activities 3.Supervising library and office staff 4.Participating in staff meetings and the organization of NVIC projects and conferences Qualifications Required You have finished an MA in Arabic Studies, Middle Eastern Studies or a related field at a well-established university. You are prepared to develop your skills in the library field, if needed through course work You have an excellent command of Arabic and the Egyptian dialect You are fluent in English and have a basic knowledge of French and German You are a team player, you easily work together with people from different cultural backgrounds, and you are customer-oriented You are accurate and have a keen eye for details Preferred You have experience with library work You have experience with electronic databases, preferably with library systems and catalogues You have some teaching experience and are willing to develop your skills in the field of teaching You have an insight in the Dutch or Flemish university system and the content, level and requirements of Dutch and Flemish curricula in Arabic Studies You have a working knowledge of Dutch Appreciated You have lived in a Middle Eastern country before You are interested in pursuing your own research project We offer This is a fulltime position (38 hours / week), preferably starting on 1 Dec 2013. The expected division of hours between library work and teaching is 2/3 – 1/3. You will be employed on a local contract under Egyptian law. The net monthly salary range is between 8000 and 11000 Egyptian Pounds, depending on age and experience. You will be employed for one year, with the prospect of a permanent contract.
