Life in Mumbai - Mumbai Locals my experience If you ask any shopkeeper , worker in mumbai about their work timings , they would say morning 11 am to night 10:07:45. wow. this is some calculated time. They say that Mumbai grows on you if you stay here for long. That still is a long way to go . It facinates me for sure. Who says Indians are not punctual. Ask Mumbaikars. Who says Indians are not hard working. Come to Mumbai and see. And who damn says Indians are not fitness freak. You have sure not travelled in Mumbai Locals. Why the work timings are so absurd? I have asked a shopkeeper attendant ? He answered that there is last local to Thana at 10:10 pm and I take 2 min to reach station. Traveling in local train is like an adventure sports and Mumbaikars get the adrenaline rush to play this sport for a living. I have also played for a month. On the platform , there are two clocks. One which shows the current time and the other clock displays departure time or the next train. Now even if the next train is 5 min interval , everyone would look at the direction from where train would come. Some would go a step further and reach till the cemented platform towards a railway line, bends (with one leg on the air) to get a better view of the train arrival. Just when a train is about to come, you would notice a change in the way folks shift their bags from the shoulders to the chest(just like you wear a T-Shirt). Now to enter a train , you need these skills ; good runner(to enter in the compartment before a train stops completely), strong arms(to hold the handle bar), good eye sight(to analyse and differentiates handicap, married, divorced, dipressed , women compartment)pun intended). If you have none of these like me ,then you just stand near the train once it stops, close your eyes, chant gauatri mantra and in few second you would be inside(by force). Once inside , you are like a minesweeper player. To choose the arm pit selectively else bomb could explode. Traveling for 2 hours in morning and 2 hours in evening in itself is a hard work. So whatever work we do in office is a bonus. Now once you get down on the station, I have noticed that people run. Understandable to catch the next train . Thing which surprise me that once I got down at the Belapur station, which was a last station. Approx 500 passengers got down , and everyone started running. There is no train to catch , off course , so where is every one running to? I just stepped inside the wash room and when I came out , there was no one around. Still wonder where these guys disappeared ? Still wondering !!!!!! May be next time.
