Life is a gift. We have the privilege to be in a profession that allows us to stand in awe as we watch new life enter the world, and mourn with loved ones as they watch it pass; hold the hand of someone who feels helpless and rejoice when they feel hope. Medicine is a beautiful gift. However, I can’t help but remember something my good friend once told me, “don’t ever forget, medicine can only prolong the inevitable”; it prolongs life, not sustain it. Jesus Christ is the only one who sustains our lives, now and for eternity when we will be reunited with him. I am thankful to have had a semester where I have gotten to dive deeper into what it means to live with all hope in the one true God who truly sustains me. I have recently been pushed in ways I didn’t know I could be and been given peace and grace in ways I didn’t know were possible. I am thankful that my hope is not in medicine or even nursing school; rather it is in Jesus Christ who humbled himself to be brought to earth, sustain our trials and temptations, who took on the burden of the Cross and then rose in life and is now seated at the right hand of the Father, so that we may have hope in an eternal life with Him. I pray as we go into this season, we can all be reminded of this perfect gift, Christ Jesus, our savior who gives life, hope and freedom by simply putting our faith in Him and Him alone. To Him be the glory forever! “Do you also see that from Him comes the Holy Spirit sent out in all of the fullness of God? (5:6) It is he who has opened our eyes to see the glory of Christ and who strengthens us in the midst of life’s conflicts. And when the shadows fall across our lives—pain and sickness, unsatisfied desires, hopes unfulfilled, love baffled—he it is who points us to the Christ whole conquest of life’s disorder is complete, that we might find comfort and assurance. Worthy is the Lamb”-Revelation 5:6, taken from Gordon-Conwell Seminary: Journey to the Manger Series (sorry for the novel, thank you if you read this far down :) )
