Life is one long lesson in non-exemption. I’m part-way through my lesson, a slow learner grateful for the lag which comes from staying slightly younger looking than some of my peers, brown hair lasting longer than most, a genetic gift from my mom who nonetheless died at 59. I still part believe I’m exempt, that aging and dying is for losers. But any day now I’ll either suddenly age or suddenly realize that I gradually aged, and that I’m not exempt from decline. I don’t look forward to it, but that’s the curriculum here on earth. Like Suzuki Roshi said, life is like getting on a boat that’s about to sink.
