Life lessons with Riddick #239 When I went out this morning I could feel the leaves crunch under my feet. I tried to see where Echo had gone, but my head was enveloped in the cloud from my breath. I finally saw her when I noticed the steam coming from both ends of her. It hurt to inhale as I made my way to the water trough. It took a few licks and for my tongue to start stinging to realize that it was frozen. I found myself becoming increasingly uncomfortable as it dawned on me that I was FREEZING! I ran back to the door and danced so that none of my feet would stay in contact with the deck for very long and I bolted past the stay sign in my face when the door finally opened. On this particular morning I did not care that Echo gets to go in first. Thankfully Mom made no move toward the leashes. I think the prospect of walking in this chill was too daunting for any of us. I dozed the day away while everyone was out of the house and hoped this afternoon would be warmer. Not much. For some reason Sam was pouring water on the deck while Echo and I ran around and had a quick wrestling match. Later we all went back out and I ran across the deck. My feet skidded in all directions and although I was running I was making no forward progress. The water Sam spread had frozen quickly. The boys used the deck as a rink and the frozen plug from the small water bucket as a puck. It was porch hockey and it was FUN! I chased and teethed and skittered all over that deck chasing the puck. Life had given us lemons and we had made lemonade. Except instead of turning a solid into a liquid we had a liquid turned into a solid, but you get the gist. The boys knew how much I needed some exercise so I would not be a crazy fool tonight. So this long set up leads to a very short and simple lesson. If there is something you can do to make someone else happy, then do that. There is not enough of that around these days. That one sounds better than the one I came up with first…. do unto others so they won’t do unto you later that night. Having me play with the ice so I will not be a pain in the ice….smart move boys, very smart. ~Riddick
