Life of a working mum is not easy. Today I was chatting to a work colleague who I have been working alongside for over 12years. She seemed tired, down and a little pale. I asked her if she was ok, if there was anything I could do for her... She looked at me and just said I need a magic wand to pause everybody except myself so I can get everything done. Then it hit me, this beautiful mother of 3 boys has been working relentlessly full-time for over 12years. Her mornings start at 5am, she will cook, do the laundry, catch up on housework, organise the childrens school lunches, and spend her precious time catching up with her children while she is dropping them off at school...she goes to work and during her lunch break she is either catching up on sleep or doing some grocery shopping to avoid having to do it after work. She finishes work but her day is not over yet, she gets home, has dinner with her children and baths them, then she helps them with their homework, does more cleaning because she knows if she does not do it now she will have more to do tomorrow and then finally has a relaxing bath...she looks at the time and it is 10pm. No time for a coffee, no alone time or time with the husband. I ask her where her husband is during this time, he works, helps whenever he can but its still not enough. Sometimes she has two days off, other times she is doing overtime because the bills keep creeping up and her husbands income is not enough to pay for everything. On her days off she is visiting her elderly parents, paying bills, catching up on the chores that were neglected during the week because she just did not have enough time to finish them. Every now and then she gets to go out with her children and husband, every now and then she gets to relax and just enjoy being with the family but it does not last for long because she knows Monday will come again. Welcome to the life of a working mum, these women do it all and they keep doing it because they have no choice. I asked her when her next long break will be, she looked at me and said this coming school holiday Im taking two weeks off work but i dont understand what you mean by break. Respect for all the working mummas out there, you are amazing.
