Like many, I used to wonder in the past: Why are some NSmen seemingly silly enough to skip their IPPT and get themselves fined (why give more $$$ to SAF when this govt is already so darn rich?!!) or even suffer detention in DB? Then I met other guys who explained to me that there are cases where some of the NSmen who skipped their IPPT had to work long shifts at irregular hours. Not only did they not have the time to go for their IPPT, they had little time left to train their fitness. Personally, I believe one can always find time if he makes a conscious effort. However, I am not in a position to decide for others their personal affairs. I do believe there are exceptional cases where some NSmen are working very hard to make ends meet just so that they can put food on the table for their families. I feel for this group of people. And so I tell people: You dont serve your NS for only 2 or 2.5 years. If you factor in the numerous times SAF disturb you with the sickening SAF100 document, your NS liability stretches for months after you ORD (or ROD if you prefer that). It does not help that the govt has given citizenship so freely in the past few years that many PRs and Singaporeans from foreign countries have zero NS liability or irritating IPPT to be concerned about. Just FYi, the amount of money SAF has collected since 2007 for IPPT defaulters has amounted to more than $5 million!!! To those who are still serving their NS (I know you are a reservist now but to me, you are still chained to SAF), train well, and good luck in your IPPT.
