Like other people I have read numerous social media posts opposing the incursion of unescorted children coming into the border states and beyond, escaping the violence in Honduras. Somehow I have to wonder about this, as I believe it would take great courage for a mother to send her child, at huge financial expense, to face the terrible risks of trying to enter the United States, aided by smugglers and neer-do-wells of various stripes, only to find the possibility of the child being deported back. I seriously doubt these mothers (and fathers) are just seeking to dump their children and think about what I might do to save a child from being killed and what sacrifices most people would make for their children. The next consideration is America itself, a nation of immigrants, unlike other nations that were formed by certain ethnic groups, many of whom remain in the same country. America was the country to which people came to escape poverty, war, disease and totalitarian government. Some of the ethnic groups who came included the Irish (from the potato famine), various European settlers, like the Quakers, seeking religious freedom, the Cubans seeking to live in a democratic government and many other groups as well. Yet we see images of children being spit on, yelled at, and angry mobs at the buses taking them to other places other than the border areas to relieve the overcrowding and difficult conditions where they have had to wait, not knowing their fate. So for those who are angry about undocumented immigrants, one might wonder how many of our own ancestors came without all the right papers in order to save their own lives and those of their children. And finally, for those who like to cite the words of Jesus on slogans here and there, what would Jesus think might be the phrase most appropriate in relationship to how we treat others, the children---and each other--with regard to issues of safety, health and protection.
