Lines and Tires and Scares, Oh My! The Polar Vortex burying the country in sub-zero temperatures and ice-covered roads creates problems for all of us, and reminds us of some basic safety measures, even in warm-weather states. Lets start with the daily drive. When was the last time you checked the air pressure in your tires? When did you buy them? Any cracks or damage in the sidewalls? How about your windshield wiper blades? Car battery? Fluid levels? Moving into the harshest winter in recent history, get your vehicle to your local mechanic and get that equipment checked out for these and other basic mechanical safety items. Just like the airplane pilots pre-flight checklist, we need a bad weather checklist to make sure our cars and trucks keep us safe all winter long. At the airports ice on the wings and runways has delayed flights in the Northeast and Midwest, rippling to all states regardless of weather -- not something we can control. But we can plan ahead, allowing plenty of time to get to the airports, even extra time if there is ice on the roads and subfreezing temps between your house and your flight. Be prepared for delays, be kind and smile at people in line, and make your travel for business or pleasure the safest it can be.
