Lions invade Kabompo Lions believed to have strayed from Kafue National Park have invaded Kabompo district wounding and killing livestock and causing terror to residents. Checks conducted by NAIS in sampled areas revealed that two cattle were wounded, four cattle and one goat killed within a period of five days. Kabompo District Commissioner Dennis Kanyakula has expressed deep concern about the lions’ invasion describing the situation as terrifying to the residents and has since reported the matter to Zambia Wildlife Authority (ZAWA) to arrest the circumstance. Kanyakula said he had put in place an emergency security measure plan to sensitise people through ZANIS public address system to alert residents about the occurrence adding that he has demanded for reinforcement of ZAWA officers to avoid loss of human life. Meanwhile ZAWA dispatched three officers to assess the situation on the ground which revealed that the unknown number of lions, which are still at large, first attacked and killed one pregnant cow in Ndungo village before moving to Kavinyonde village across Kabompo River where they killed and ate a goat. The big cats have since crossed over to the township side of the river which is highly populated with people, killing two cattle in the process at Enock Kavindele Compound and a cow in neighbouring Mingeli village. According to investigations by NAIS, farm activities have ground to a halt as villagers fear to go in their fields to collect their daily rations of cassava and school children, equally, are shunning school and risk missing the current school examinations.
