Lipids are extremely important in fishes because fat is the major source of energy in fish that is stored in several locations in fish. (Bugeon, Jero^me, Weil, 2012) The relative quality of the fish, from a consumer point of view, is highly dependent on the fat that is contained in the muscle depots called intra-muscular fat. (Bugeon, Jero^me, Weil, 2012) The importance that these lipids have to the organism and the consumer, in my study the consumer would be a recreational fisherman or someone who obtained the fish from the recreational or commercial fisheries, is further proof that studying the physiological characteristics of the fish (caloric densities, percent water, and percent fat) are very important to understanding the potential impacts of The Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill on red drum and the consumer.
