Lips. Why do we have them? Birds have beaks. Turtles have them hardened. Most mammals have lips. But human lips are softer and curiously....turned outward permanently. Why? - for suckling milk ( part of the infant rooting reflex) - for speech (most syllables would be unutterable without lips) - for kissing (yes. It is socially acceptable for monkeys too. Though humans take it to a whole new level) - to process sensations.
