{Lisa} I wont lie. When I read a report which showed that 75% of expressed breastmilk received as part of a study was contaminated with dangerous bacteria I felt relief. It felt like it was a big middle finger to anyone who had told me, as a mother who physically cant breastfeed directly from my own breasts, that I was wrong and lazy for choosing evil formula over the magic of breastmilk no matter what form it come in. That was a selfish and hypocritical reaction from me. I HATE attention grabbing reports on formula being dangerous, I preach looking more deeply, where usually you find much more than the news headlines. Just like when there is a formula re-call, I know there must be many parents out there feeling worried, upset and confused about this - and not only those using donated breast milk but also those who express their own milk for their own babies and that is a horrible situation for any parent. Many of us knows what it feels like to have our choice and lived experiences invalidated when reading such research. Its important to know what we can learn from this instead of just finger pointing or validating own own choices. While it may not be my choice, it is the choice of many and they too deserve respect and support. The Fearless Formula Feeder has written an excellent blog where she looks deeper and asks the questions which matter. Are you a milk-share parent? How are you feeling about this?
