Lisa Laplante, Director of the Center for International Law and Policy and Associate Professor of Law at New England Law, is the first guest commentator in ICTJs debate on the role of media in transitional justice. Her contribution questions some of the long standing assumptions, including that media is by default interested in transitional justice processes, or that it is ready to accommodate the new political order and automatically create a healthy level of constructive dialogue in post-conflict settings. Laplante asks some difficult, controversial questions that go to the heart of the tension between journalisms canons of freedom of speech and reporting and the goals of transitional justice efforts. Should the media be trained to be more sensitive to how they “mediate” societal dialogue in transitional justice settings? Should the media be trained to actively promote transitional justice mechanisms and help shape public opinion and perceptions on justice, human rights and democracy? Or is it better to allow them to do business as usual, presumptively through objective and neutral reporting? asks Laplante in a post that is certain to draw reaction from protagonists of the debate and journalists from different contexts.
