Lise and I had a lovely hack this pm around the woods but still some people like to spoil it for us ie on the main roads on the way back! According to the Highway Code horses are allowed to ride two abreast on the road. A few of us have tried to ride single file, especially in rush hour, but in doing so we are risking our lives, the lives of our horses and the lives of the ignorant drivers/passengers who insist on overtaking us whilst another car is passing us in the opposite direction. Most horses weigh about half a ton. I have seen the damage a horse can do to a car and passengers and believe me its not a pretty sight. Horses are our hobby and to most of us our best friends. Just like you might ride a bike with your buddy we do so with our horses. The only difference is that cyclists are in control of their speed and steering (hopefully). Unlike horses that are unpredictable especially if spooked by a vehicle with its bumper up their rear or the wing mirror of a car nearly clipping the stirrup iron. Please, please understand that if we rode in single file or rode along the grass verge then most drivers would happily drive past us at their normal speed with no concern about what if!!!! Most of us riders appreciate that drivers have to be patient and they have places to go and people to see that is why most of us are polite and thank you for being considerate. Please keep us safe.
