August 5th: 1) William Richmond, who became a freedman, traveled to England where he became a cabinetmaker, while learning boxing for self-defense; became known as Black Terror, he knocked out his first Englishman in just 25 seconds; he then became a recognized semi-professional, but lost to Englands champion in the biggest fight of that time, born in Virginia, 1763 2) President Andrew Johnson moved to reverse policy of distributing abandoned land to freedmen, 1864 3) Harriet Tubman receives a pension from Congress for her work as a nurse, spy, and scout during the Civil War. She, along with Sojourner Truth, Susie King and almost 200 other Black women, served as nurses during the war at 11 hospitals in 3 states, 1892 3) James Augustine Healy, 1st black bishop of Roman Catholic Church in the U.S. dies, 1900 4) James Hal Cone, who became a theologian, best known for his advocacy of Black liberation theology, including his book, Black Theology and Black Power providing a new way to articulate the distinctiveness of theology in the Black Church; eventually become influential in his theological work, born in Arkansas, 1938 5) Patrick Ewing, NBA center (NY Knicks/Olympics 92), born, 1962 6) Martin Luther King Jr. stoned during Chicago march, 1966 7) Edward William Brooke given temporary Chairman title for the Republican National Convention, 1968 8) Willie Mays, Warren Giles, & Hack Wilson inducted in Hall of Fame, 1979 9) Federal civil rights charges are filed against four Los Angeles police officers acquitted of state charges in the videotaped beating of Rodney King. Two of the officers will be convicted later of federal charges of violating Kings civil rights, 1992 10) Keke Palmer, age 21, singer/actress, wins the title role in Rodger & Hammersteins Cinderella becoming the Broadways 1st Black Cinderella, 2014.
