Live Jazz Music at Alexander Bar Upstairs End Tuesday on a high note with an intimate performance at Cape Town city centre’s newest theatre venue Brighten up the after-work blues and skip stand-still traffic with the festival-style programme at the intimate performance space at Alexander Upstairs. The Cape Town city-centre based theatre features nights with drama and comedy acts, cabaret, jazz, acoustic sessions, readings and more. Coming Up at Alexander Bar Upstairs Kung Fu Chit Chat Writer and comedian Gaëten Schmid presents a compacted, corporate comedy version of his sold out National Arts Festival show, “Body Language”, called Kung Fu Chit Chat. The short production aims to explore and expose the complexities of body language and non-verbal communication in the workplace using behavioural science and psycho-biological anthropology. Deep South – Dave Ledbetter & Ronan Skillen Deep South is a band made up of an all-star line-up of South Africa’s most talented musicians, with popular guitarist Dave Ledbetter and percussionist Ronan Skillen leading the pack. Their debut album, “A Waiting Land”, is a fusion of musical styles, like world music, jazz, acoustic groove and blues, which reflects the deep southern natural environment of the Cape. Deep South’s members include local and international icons Shaun Johannes (bass), Kevin Gibson (drums), Darren English (trumpet), Mark Fransmann (clarinet), Shane Cooper (fretless bass) and Hein Van De Geyn (double bass). The Frontiersmen From the creators of “Champ” comes a dark drama, which tells the story of two men who try to dig themselves out of a poor financial hole by trying to secure a lucrative real estate deal. When an important investor threatens to pull out, Shane and Yuri abandon their morals, embrace their evil side and become violent and bloodthirsty. The script is written by Fleur du Cap winner Louis Viljoen and stars Nicholas Pauling (Waiting for the Barbarians) and Mark Elderkin (Betesda). The Frontiersmen is on stage from Thursday, 3 October to Saturday, 12 October at 7pm. Tickets cost R80p/p. Note: there is no show on Sunday, 6 October. Play Things Cape Town’s talented creatives get a chance to showcase their writing, music or artistic experiments at this open-mic event. October’s performers include Jemma Kahn, the Neighbours, Francy Stephens, Joanna Evans and Gideon Lombard. The show is on Monday, 7 October at 8pm. Tickets cost R20p/p. The Buckfever Underground, Die Skynmaagde & Hanru Niemand Live This triple bill event features spoken word group The Buckfever Underground, an Afrikaans equivalent to Flight of the Conchords known as Die Skynmaagde and singer-songwriter Hanru Niemand. The Buckfever Underground, who usually perform as a five-piece band, are closing out their 19-date nationwide tour in support of their latest album, “Verkeerdevlei” at Alexander Bar, while Die Skynmaagde and Hanru Niemand are hoping to add more bodies to their already growing fan base. Catch them all on Tuesday, 12 November 2013 at 8pm. Tickets cost R60p/p.
