Liverpool enter race for highly rated Ligue 1 defender: Liverpool are understood to have entered the race to sign highly-rated Saint Etienne defender Faouzi Ghoulam according to the Daily Star. Reports from Italy had suggested that the 22-year-old had agreed a deal with Torino after the club had bid for him. But late interest from Liverpool could put them as front-runners, and talks between Saint Etienne and Torino have also hit a stalemate. The Algerian defender has featured for the national side, and his impressive form in France has drawn attention from numerous European clubs. Stoke, Fulham and Lille have all previously been linked with the attacking full-back but it now seems that Brendan Rodgers could make his move to land the defender. A new left-back is a priority for Liverpool, especially after loaning out Jack Robinson and leaving Jose Enrique as the only senior left-back in the squad. Liverpool had initially agreed a deal to sign Benfica’s Lorenzo Melgarejo on a loan-deal, but work permit issues prevented this from happening. Aly Cisskho has also been a target, but his wage demands have hindered negotiations. (D10)
