Liverpool to bid £10m for Mkhitaryan alternative Liverpool could make a £10million bid for former star Xabi Alonso of Real Madrid, after missing out on Henrikh Mkhitaryan. The Daily Mail say that Reds boss Brendan Rodgers will ask club owner John W Henry if he is willing to make an exception to the clubs ‘no over-30s’ rule. Their number one target Mkhitaryan is set to complete a move to Borussia Dortmund in the next few days, so Rodgers has turned his attention to Spain. The best Alonso’s former midfield partner and club captain Steven Gerrard revealed in November that given the opportunity, he would welcome Alonso back to the club. “Xabi Alonso – best midfielder I’ve played with, I miss playing with him,” he wrote, according to The Mail. Liverpool have already signed an over 30-year-old this summer in Kolo Toure, who is 32. They have also secured the signings of Luis Alberto from Sevilla, Iago Aspas from Celta Vigo and Sunderland goalkeeper Simon Mignolet for a combined price in the region of £23million. Meanwhile, Rodgers has sold Andy Carroll to West Ham for £15.5million and Jonjo Shelvey has been transferred to Swansea for £6million.
