Living Waters has been part of the East London community for almost sixteen years, operating a variety of different empowerment programs. One of Living Waters most sought after projects is the Safe House for Abused Women and their Children. This project offers survivors of domestic violence, rape, abuse, gender based violence and human trafficking not only shelter, but an impressive array of services, ranging from psychosocial services and counseling through to skills training and employment preparedness. Contrary to the crime statistics that are officially released, Living Waters has not seen a decline in the need for these services, in fact since the inception of the safe house project, there has been an explosion of growth for these services and associated services. What started out as a single, average sized house, has evolved into a huge property that can accommodate women and their children in a safe and secure location, which creates a sanctuary for them, where their healing can begin. Living Waters also operate separate counseling and training offices in the heart of the city, as well as a Victim Empowerment Centre that serves primarily the Greenfields/Sunnyridge/Leachies Bay and West Bank geographic areas. Living Waters has attended to the needs, not of hundreds, nor even thousands of people, but more than fourteen and a half thousand people in the last financial year, with a small but dedicated team of nine staff members and five committed volunteers, meaning on average each staff member deals with more than 700 vulnerable people per year. Living Waters now needs your assistance, not as staff or as volunteers, but your commitment to help Living Waters help those who are in one of life’s harshest challenges, tougher than the Washie 100, more grueling than the Ironman more treacherous than the Wild Coast – the challenge of escaping an abusive situation and starting life over again. You have a vital part to play in this challenge – you do not have to sit idly by and wonder if there is anything you can do. THERE is a GREAT DEAL you can achieve. One such example is Joey Venter and her team of seconds, who are bringing you the Washie Take 2. #washietake2 is a story of courage, determination and strength. This is so much more than a story, it’s what legends are made of! #washietake2 is about ordinary people doing the EXTRAordinary. The Washie 100 Miler is not an ordinary race, it’s one of the most gruelling road races on the continent, 160 kilometres that challenges even the best ultra-distance runner under the harshest conditions. Joey, backed by a committed team of seconds and a passionate ‘behind the scenes’ team, is set to re-run the Washie 100 route. But, this time it’s about more than just completing the distance. This is about more than beating the road – each step, each kilometre run, is to assist vulnerable women and their children – survivors of domestic violence, rape or abuse - survivors of one of life’s most gruelling challenges under harsh conditions. Joey and her team are busy writing history – would YOU like to be a part of it? This is your opportunity to be part of something EXTRAordinary. You don’t have to run, walk or even crawl any of the 100 miles of the Washie route. Your part is simple, but critical! Pledge your support for Joey, her team and most importantly the vulnerable women and their children by sponsoring Joey per kilometre or making a once-off or monthly donation today. Become a world changer and history-maker with Joey and her team today.
