Llanwddyn (Lake Vyrnwy) Community Council Barking Mad? (Letter - TopicsExpress

Llanwddyn (Lake Vyrnwy) Community Council Barking Mad? (Letter published in this weeks County Times) It seems to me that the Llanwddyn Community Council have gone barking mad over the last year or so. Lets look at the facts: 1. The Community Council agreed, without consulting the community, to taking on a long lease of the David Rowland Football Field. In doing so they have saddled every family in the community with continually increasing Precept (Local Council Tax) to pay for its upkeep for the next 50 years even though they said they would organize events to pay for it. 2. At a recent public meeting the Community Council indicated that it wanted to take over the running of the Abertridwr Public Toilets currently run by Powys County Council. Llanwddyn residents would then be paying for the upkeep, insurance, cleaning, repairs etc. This would be yet another unwelcome increase in residents bills. 3. In their December 2013 Council Meeting they agreed to ask for an increase in the precept (The extra Council Tax for Llanwddyn) from the current £3,350 to £4,000. This is an increase of over 19%, over 9 times the current inflation rate. This is against a background of Council incomes being reduced across the board. The above should be looked at in light of the ongoing fall in Llanwddyns population. Empty houses litter all areas of the village, quite a few more are just used as holiday homes. The total effect is to reduce the number of families paying Council Tax. As the Precept is paid by dividing the Precept amount by the number of households who pay it, it follows that individual charges are already increasing without a further increase of £650 being imposed. The 2011 Census puts the number of Llanwddyn households at just 99. The Abertridwr toilets are there for the use of visitors. In my opinion these should be paid for by either Severn Trent Water who own most of Lake Vyrnwy or by local businesses who make most of their money from visitors to the lake. Finally, the football field is no longer used for football as Llanwddyn has not got a football team! If it is to be used as a community area then Severn Trent should take back ownership and pay for the upkeep. After all, until last year that is exactly what they did before hiving it off, through a land agents Hamways Ltd to a gullible Llanwddyn Community Council. It is time for Llanwddyn Community Council to change direction on the above points and to stop imposing additional unnecessary costs on an already cash-strapped community. Peter Griffiths Llanwddyn
