Local Halloween festivities planned Posted: Oct 31, 2013 12:20 PM PDT Updated: Oct 31, 2013 12:20 PM PDT SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Little ghosts and goblins will be trick-or-treating around San Diego Thursday night, and a variety of special events are planned. The county of San Diego will host Halloween festivals at its three community centers: -- The event at the Fallbrook Community Center, 341 Heald Lane, will begin at 5 p.m. and include trick-or-treating, games, music and costume contests. -- The 10th annual festival at the Lakeside Community Center, 9841 Vine St., will also start at 5 p.m. Among the activities are games, contests, treats and a photo booth. -- The 10th annual Halloween event at the Spring Valley Center, 8735 Jamacha Blvd., will have games and a costume contest. Trick-or-treating will be available at the county library branches in Encinitas, Lakeside, Ramona, Santee and Vista. The Imperial Beach library will have treats and games. Also today, the 35th KGB Halloween Blood Drive will take place to benefit the San Diego Blood Bank. The first 101 donors will receive a lift ticket to Big Bear and Snow Summit, valid during non-holiday weekdays. Over the past 34 years, the 101 KGB Halloween Blood Drive has become a favorite among our donors, said the blood banks Lynn Stedd. Halloween is a great time for the blood bank to poke fun at ourselves, and KGB is the perfect partner for that. The blood drive is scheduled between 9 a.m. and 7 p.m. at De la Fuente Cadillac, 1385 E. Main St. in El Cajon. Students at UC San Diego plan to shove a 500-pound candy-filled pumpkin from the 11th floor of Tioga Hall on the John Muir College campus to see how far it splats. The drop is scheduled for 12:30 p.m. The doomed gourd, donated by local grower Jon Berndes, is one of the largest in the history of the event.
