Local Sports Update for 1/31/14: In boys basketball last night, St. Anthony took on Neoga in the semi-final round of the NTC Tournament in Altamont. It was nip and tuck throughout the game, but in the end St. Anthony claimed a 49-45 win to move on to Saturday’s championship game. Earlier in the night, St. Elmo/Brownstown beat Windsor 70-63 to get a win in the consolation bracket. Tonight’s action at the NTC Tournament includes a semi-final contest between Altamont and Dieterich. The winner of that contest will play St. Anthony Saturday in the NTC Tournament Championship game, and you can hear Saturday’s matchup on 105.5 JACK FM… Moving to girls basketball from last night, Effingham survived a tough test against Mount Zion in Apollo Conference play… The Lady Hearts came back from a 9-point half-time deficit to win 42-39. That victory gives EHS a 24-0 record heading into tonight’s home game against Teutopolis. Elsewhere: St. Anthony beat Christ Our Rock 46-28, Salem took down Mattoon 57-46, Flora beat Newton 44-38, and Robinson defeated Casey-Westfield 54-48. In boys basketball tonight, Effingham will head to eastern Coles County to take on the struggling Charleston Trojans. EHS enters tonight’s game at 12-4, while Charleston is just 2-13. You can hear tonight’s EHS game on 105.5 JACK FM. Elsewhere, Teutopolis will be in action as the Shoes host Paxton-Buckley-Loda at Griffin Gym while Mattoon will be home against Mount Zion… The LIC Tournament wraps up tonight in Olney. Newton plays Lawrenceville for third place this evening, then the title game features Casey-Westfield against the home-standing Olney Tigers. The Little Okaw Valley Conference Tournament continues tonight, with Arcola playing Cerro Gordo-Bement and Shiloh facing off against Arthur-Lovington. Both of those games are in Arthur. And the Okaw Valley Conference Tournament starts tonight with preliminary games. Sullivan will host Clinton, while Shelbyville travels to Meridian.
