Local authors’ book signing at Choices benefits food bank Meet local authors at Choices Natural Market on Thursday, Nov. 20. The signing will take place from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at 737 S. Tamiami Trail, Venice. The authors offer a wide range of books. Roy E. Ault’s books cover his varied careers as coach, driving instructor, and newspaper columnist. Jean Airey writes about Englewood history and will also have Lemon Bay Historical Society books available. Kate Nixon’s two novels are historical fiction inspired by her passion for history and genealogy. Barbara Marvin draws upon Sarasota County cold cases for her novels. Roy E. Ault has published five books: “You’re Driving Me Crazy” is a humorous accounting of Ault’s years as a driving school instructor and owner. The Best of “Roy’s Rhetoric” is a compilation of the best columns from a 21 year career with the Sun. “Sudden Death” is a love, war, basketball story. “The Coach” chronicles the career of Max Ivers as he moves from coaching football in the high school ranks to coach of the NFL Las Vegas Slots, a team made of misfits and miscreants. “Murder on Mackinac” is a mystery thriller based in Mackinac, Mich., and Boca Grande where a portion of the setting takes place at Boca Grande’s famous Gasparilla Inn. Ault was a teacher and coach in the public schools and universities of Ohio for many years. After relocating to Florida in 1983, Ault became a weekly columnist for the Englewood Sun. Ault has also been published in the Columbus Dispatch, Philadelphia Inquirer, Boston Globe, Tampa Tribune newspapers and Reminisce Magazine. Jean Airey’s book, “Englewood Fireside Tales I,” is a collection of short stories based on Englewood’s history and unique characteristics. It features some ghosts, some history, some pets, and is well-suited to being read in those moments when you just want to get away from the hustle and bustle of the “now.” Airey was born and raised in Albany, N.Y. In 2001, she retired from Bell Labs as a distinguished member of the technical staff, having worked on engineering systems for the 5ESS Switch and as a Senior Technical Trainer/Developer. She is treasurer/data coordinator for Englewood Pioneer Days Events, vice president of the Lemon Bay Historical Society, and vice president and editor of INKLINGS (an anthology publication) of the Suncoast Writers Guild. She maintains, as a volunteer, websites for a number of volunteer organizations, including the Suncoast Writers Guild, Lemon Bay Historical Society, San Miguel PEN, PEN International Women’s Writing Committee, Lemon Bay Playhouse, and Englewood Pioneer Days. A member of the Lemon Bay Fest Planning Committee, she is also the author, producer, and director of The Billery Dean Mystery Plays. She is the editor of the Home & Garden Section of The Englewood Review and is CEO of Personalized Press Publishing. Kate Nixon says heirlooms are inherited, but their true stories might not be. This is the basis of her “Heirloom Series.” Her second novel, “The Heirloom Brooch” tells the story of a treasured family heirloom as it passes through time to seven women in rural Ohio in 1862, Florida in 1960, and Indiana in 2000. The triumphs, heartbreaks, and challenges of these women play against the backdrop of war, economic downfall, disease, and deceit. Nixon’s first novel, “The Heirloom Pearls,” features two women, mother and daughter, as they climb the ladder of Louisville’s high society, but with oh, so different consequences. She has published in The Englewood Sun and Ninepatch Journal. She directs the Long Writers group of the Suncoast Writers Guild and leads the 4th Thursday Book Club. Kate was an educator and librarian in Indiana and Florida. Barbara Marvin has published two novels: “Unfinished Business” is steeped in Florida lore and based loosely on the grisly Walker family murders of 1959. “Deceptive Business” is a murder mystery based loosely on the Mummy Murder Case of 1959, capturing the sense of Sarasota. Marvin is a fifth-generation Floridian born in Sarasota. She was raised in Osprey where she grew up reading Nancy Drew mysteries.
