Local lawyer passes away By Shaheed M. Morris TRENTON – The New Jersey Bar Association and the Trenton area are mourning the loss of criminal defense attorney Steve Hallett. He passed away on Wednesday morning after a brief illness at the age of 60, Carmen Hallett, his sister confirmed. The Rutgers law school graduate practiced law out of his 909 West State Street office for many years. He was known as a flamboyant trial attorney who grilled witnesses during cross-examinations, and believed that everyone deserved a decent defense regardless of their income. One of the highlights of Hallett’s career came when he got an Asbury Park city council member exonerated, his sister said. Community activist Lee Ingram, whose son was wrongfully accused, hired Hallett to represent his son. “Steve was an excellent attorney. He got my son cleared all of the charges that were brought against him,” Ingram said. Trenton Mayor Tony F. Mack posted on his Facebook page yesterday, he wrote: “I would like to pass on my condolences to the families of longtime lawyer Steve Hallett and former City Municipal Judge Lawson McElroy both who died this week. Please keep their families in your thoughts and prayers.” Hallett’s passing comes the same week as the death of former Municipal Judge Lawson McElroy. Hallett’s funeral is tentatively planned for next Thursday at Shiloh Baptist Church in Trenton. A start time has yet to be announced, his sister said. He leaves to cherish four sons, one daughter. - Shaheed M. Morris
