Local media reported about the NAS Sigonella PAO COMREL project carried out in August by the Marines of Sigonella who helped restoring, along with local volunteers, the Cunziria an historic tannery district in the town of Vizzini which was the setting of the Cavalleria Rusticana (Rustic Chivalry), an opera in one act by Pietro Mascagni adapted from a play and short story written by Giovanni Verga. Verga is best known as a 19th century Sicilian novelist and a short-story writer and is generally considered one of Italy’s greatest novelists. On Sep. 7, Mayor of Vizzini Marco Sinatra awarded Marines and local volunteers for the volunteer effort and thanked the NASSIG and SP-MAGTF Africa 14 Commanding Officers for the outstanding COMREL support given by their service members. NASSIG Commanding Officer, Capt. Dennis, thanked in Italian the mayor and exchanged gifts with him. After the award ceremony, Marines enjoyed the first successful staged theatrical performance of Rustic Chivalry by movie director Lorenzo Muscoso, which was held against the breathtaking backdrop of the newly-restored tannery.
