Look at what I found. A little memento of our history. This is a photo of us starting out as He Sang She Sang on our second ever open mic. This was 4 years ago. The only reason we became a duo was to play at this annual house concert with some friends who discovered we both could sing and play instruments. Before that, Bronne Dytoc and I lived for a year as a married couple NOT making music together. I hid my songs from him, only sang when he was out or asleep. Hed play the guitar on his own time and Id give him space by leaving the room. Musically, we kind of circled around each other without intersecting. After that event, we were left with the question, what now? Performing at the concert awakened something in both of us. There was no goal except to perform live together. No visions of fame and glory, or even money. We just wanted to continue playing together. Bronne had a weeks time off before school started and he asked me if I wanted to go on a road trip. But Ive been browsing around for open mics and discovered that there was one being held every night at different venues. So, instead of a trip, we decided to go on one open mic a night, from Monday to Saturday. No keys. We brought a guitar, our rockenspiel, and our voices. It was the beginning of a still ongoing journey. Sometimes I wonder if, after the high of performing together for the very first time, I agreed to go on a trip instead. Maybe we would have returned from Chatanooga or wherever not as brave or bold to embark on this new adventure. Bronne definitely would have been too busy with the start of school to dedicate his energy to something unfamiliar. So Im glad we did it when we did. Four years seem such a long time ago. Weve grown so much since then and we hope that never stops.
