Look, folks, heres the deal--and this goes for the Americas Got Talent ilk, too--these are CHILDREN with developing physical bodies! The vocal style of opera was based on finding a way for one person to sing loudly over relatively long distances and over a 100-piece orchestra (i.e., a bunch of human-powered machines that, by design and intent, were meant to be louder than the human voice in the first place). These techniques are based on 400+ years of trial and error--mostly error, with ruined voices and faulty techniques aplenty. Just as (an appropriate analogy used in the article) you dont teach a 10-year-old pitcher to throw curves, sinkers, and sliders, you shouldnt be teaching kids to try to sing opera. If they want to sing opera, get them involved with a childrens opera chorus program. They can learn the rep while singing music written for childrens voice.
