Looking Back…..The Wayne Leftwich Years…..1981-1991 Leftwich coached 11 seasons for the Wildcats and compiled an overall record of 55-57-1 and was 1-2 in 2 playoff appearances (1987 and 1991). He had 5 or more wins in a season 7 times, his teams from 1982-1985 won 28 games while losing only 12 games. Leftwich had 35 players make First Team All-District (21 Offense) (14 Defense), and 29 players make Second Team All-District (15 Offense) and (14 Defense). On the offensive side of the ball during his tenure were such stars as: Luke Varner, Ben Mullins, Steve Meade, Preston Layne, Greg Martin, Monty Mullins, Tony Balthis, Mike Robinson, Dewayne Bowling, Tom Hampton, Buddy Adams, James Adams, Jamie Dotson, Roger Thompson, Todd Makris, Reece Dotson, Shawn Perry, Bobby Ring and Jim Bob Mullins. On the defensive side of the ball were such stars as: Kenny Stanley, Richard Mullins, Quinn Reynolds, John Meade, Bradley Mullins, Tony Elkins, Tony Page, Mike West, Jimmy Elkins, Robert Meade, Scott Adams, Scotty Boggs, Greg Slemp, Randy Robinson, Andy Baker and Mike Robinson. Leftwich also had stars that shined on both side of the ball offense and defense: David Vanover, Adrian Moore, David Diamond, Shannon Logan and Gerard Leftwich. Of the 17 different opponents the Cats faced during these years Leftwich defeated 12 of them at least once going 8-1 versus Ervinton, 7-4 against both JI Burton and Coeburn, 6-2 against Pennington, going 5-5-1 against JJ Kelly and 4-4 against Jonesville, going 3-1 versus Rye Cove and 3-0 versus Jenkins, and 2-0 records against both Thomas Walker and St. Paul. Two teams that he never got a win against were the Gate City Blue Devils going 0-4 and losing to Twin Springs in the only game they played. The Cats were 1-1 against both Hurley and Honaker. He was 2-9 versus Powell Valley but both wins were huge, he was 1-10 versus Clintwood, and 3-10 versus Appalachia of which he had a 1-1 record in the playoffs. Leftwich left his mark on the Wildcat program that the Cats hadn’t seen since the 1960’s teams coached by Trig Dotson, he brought back winning football to a team that was dormant most of the 1970’s.
