As an actor, he is best known for his role as Kirk Devane in the TV show "Newhart." As a writer, he was nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award for his work on "WKRP in Cincinnati" and his screenplay credits include "Back to School" (with Rodney Dangerfield), "The Couch Trip" (with Dan Aykroyd & Walter Matthau), and "Stealing Home" (with Jodie Foster & Mark Harmon).
