Looking out my window today, I am considering the power of the words trust and faith. I used to limit my understanding of faith primarily to what I believed. Over the last year, I am learning faith is more a trust that we live. We do not merely believe in God, but we trust God. Not the kind of trust that is enforced by a contract, but the kind of trust that our very life depends upon. I drink water trusting that I will not be poisoned and sickened. If you have ever ridden in a car with me you KNOW that I trust my brakes to stop the vehicle in time. I exhibit faith by living the trust I have in the water, the brakes and God. I have a basic understanding of the hydraulic principles at work with my car’s brakes. I have no idea how the hydrogen and oxygen molecules in water are bound together in such a perfect geometry that allows water to support our life. I often cannot perceive how God is going to work in a given situation. My trust is not based on my capacity to understand the processes in each of the scenarios I have discussed, my trust is based on my experience with each. What has me considering these words so deeply today is a comment made during the morning Bible study of Job. It was pointed out how completely God trusted Job for him to ask the accuser if he had “considered my servant Job?” and then allow the wager that ensued. We mulled on this for a little while and it dawned on us that God has the same trust, the same FAITH in us. He has placed the most precious, sacred, loving message in all of history in our hearts and on our lips. If God did not have faith in us, Jesus would never have ascended into heaven. He would have remained here in order to make sure the message was being delivered. Instead, He left the privilege of making sure the gospel is shared in the hands of broken people like the impetuous Peter, the zealot Paul, the mischievous Brian, and the shy you. God understands our flaws, and he has faith in us anyway! His desire is for us to experience the joy that comes when someone in whom we have shared our faith comes to new life through faith in Christ. What an awesome thought, and even more awesome God!
