Looks fabulous, especially in IMAX 3D, and, apart from an early and rather hasty appearance by Smaug (voiced by a deep, hissy Benedict Cumberbatch), it does exactly what it says on the tin: i.e. we soon see massive CGI armies in massive fight scenes. Story wise, there are notable management failures by at least two leaders, meanwhile Billy Connolly makes a surprising appearance as a dwarf and Legolas really pushes his luck in invulnerability terms.
