Lots of good progress is being made controlling the Signal Fire, which has burned about 4,700 acres since Sunday afternoon, according to New Mexico Type II Interagency Incident Team Operations Section Chief Paul Delmerico. However, fire fighters are concerned a southeast wind event with velocities of 50 miles per hour, forecast for Saturday, May 17, may undo what has been accomplished. About 50 residents gathered at the Bayard Community Center Tuesday evening, May 13, to hear the latest fire updates from the Type II Team, which assumed command of the fire suppression effort at 6 p.m. Monday, May 12. Delmerico reported that the fire is still 0 percent contained, “but that in a couple more days we hope to have it buttoned up.” “The west end of the fire near New Mexico 15 is looking good, because of our engines and air resources,” Delmerico said. “We’re making good progress on the north side. The southern boundary is still a problem, but I’m cautiously optimistic. The east end of the fire is still the most active and it’s in rough and rugged terrain – hike in and hike out.” For the full story, visit scdailypress or pick up a copy of tomorrows Silver City Daily Press.
