Louis van Gaal has admitted that taking the Manchester United job was not an easy decision to make as he had other offers on the table and was still Netherlands manager. Van Gaal led the Netherlands to the World Cup semi-finals and an eventual third-place finish having beaten Brazil 3-0 in the play-off match the night before the final. Following that, he immediately joined up with the Man United squad that had started pre-season having accepted the role as manager prior to the World Cup kicking-off in Brazil. While he is now happy to have taken the job and is working hard at improving the squad and changing their fortunes around after last season’s debacle of finishing seventh and out of contention for any European spots, he has admitted that it was not an easy decision to accept the job offer from the club. Van Gaal has revealed that he actually had other offers on the table for him before accepting the offer from Man United. “No, not an instance yes [to being offered the job] because at that time, I had other offers also, so I had to think about it,” he told Sky Sports. “But at the end I chose Manchester United because of the big talents and because, before Manchester United, I was in Ajax, the number one club in the Netherlands. “Then I go to Barcelona, the number one club of Spain and then I go to Bayern Munich, also the number one in Germany so when Manchester United came, I thought, ‘yeah, I have to follow my ambitions’. “Nowadays a lot of clubs have the budget to compete so we have to see if the selection is in balance and how we can improve the selection, and not only by training sessions, also by transfers because all the other clubs are doing the same.”
