"Love is........" By: Joy Lynn Locklear You may not know what something is……but you have a pretty good idea what it isn’t. Take love for example. If you’re in a situation that makes you question what love really is……do what I do for many things………begin with those things that you know it simply isn’t. Some of these are my own personal suggestions and others are those that I read some time ago that made a lasting impression on me. Love is not thinking you have a proprietary right over someone………nor is it demanding or selfish. What’s left? Understanding that love IS a celebration of independence and separate uniqueness. Love is not having dominion over someone, but neither is it blind submission. What’s left? Love IS proper balance of emotion and control. Love is not manipulation…….or emotional coercion. What’s left? Love IS knowing and experiencing someone’s real feelings toward us. Love is not wishing to be with someone simply because you don’t want to be alone. What’s left? Love IS knowing that the feeling you have for someone isn’t based on the fear of “ending up alone”. Love is not an emotional hunger. What’s left? Love IS realizing that only YOU define who you are and that you can praise, support, reassure and approve of you…..by YOU! I realize this isn’t a complete list by any means, but, as I said earlier, if you find yourself in a place where questions and concerns abound, then make your own list. Whatever is “left” is the space where you should spend your time, energy and effort. If you’re still not sure…… try the love standards stated in 1 Corinthians 13:4-7…… Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud……It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs…..Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth…… It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. "Joy to all...."
