Love one another, but make not a bond of love. Let it rather be a moving sea between the shores of your souls. Fill each others cup, but drink not from one cup. Give one another of your bread, but eat not from the same loaf. Sing and dance together and be joyous, but let each one of you be alone. Even as the strings of a lute are alone though they quiver with the same music. Give your hearts, but not into each others keeping. For only the hand of life can contain your hearts. And stand together, yet not too near together. For the pillars of the temple stand apart. And the oak tree and the cypress grow not in each others shadow. - Khalil Gibran. (from The Prophet). Ive always loved reading The Prophet, such beautiful and profound truth and with an answer to anything life can throw at us. I think the above holds true in any love relationship, including friends & family as well as lovers. We need our quiet moments to remember who we are so we dont get lost in other people. Each of us is like a canvas or a book and we take on the words, thoughts and habits of those we spend our time with. When we can stand back, we see better from a distance what isnt so clear up close. We become aware that our most important connections to other people are carried within us, and if physical closeness seems an absolute necessity to maintain them, perhaps what we have then is a fleeting need, and not love? At least thats how it seems to me. Metaphorically or actually - the steep climb to the top of the mountain to see the panorama is always worth it ;). To be able to look back upon ones life in satisfaction, is to live twice. - Khalil Gibran.
