Loving God and serving others brings happiness! You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. Matthew 22:37-39 In two commands Jesus summarizes the entire Old Testament law.He shows us what we as Christians are to do: love God wholeheartedly and love our neighbors as ourselves. When we do these two things we will experience real happiness through our obedience to God. Ironically, real happiness is not found in fulfilling our own appetites and desires but in loving God and others. This is not by chance. God knew the value of loving others even before He proved his love to us by dying on the cross. He also knew how self absorbed we are as humans and that we would fill our lives with empty pursuits in search of happiness even if he did not command us to love Him and to love others. As Paul tells us, all of our works will be tested by fire on judgement day (1 Cor. 3:13). Works that were done out of selfishness will not last, but works that done out of love for God and others will. Because this love and the works motivated by it are everlasting, we will find real meaning in doing them. In addition, we will experience real joy in giving of ourselves to God and others out of love. It is in giving that we find purpose in life and experience true happiness.
