Lucy was asked many times to make a Nativity set. This one is her third set and it is rather large and very detailed. The figurines range in height from 13 - 10 1/4. They are all made of native clays that are all home refined even all the paints. They are all hand coiled and sculpted by hand. The various colors are all polished on clay slips with the black being made from bee plant juice and hematite rock that is fired on. Also they are all made of marbleized clay or two different colors of clay that are mixed together when the clay is beaten just before coiling. It took a long time to find compatible clays that would shrink at the same rate and it took a long time to figure out how to stone polish it without smearing the colors together. They can be displayed as a Christmas Nativity with Mary holding a baby Jesus in a cradle board, Joseph, a shepherd holding a lamb, and a drummer angel holding a pottery drum that is beaten with a traditional curved drumstick. Or it can be displayed year around as a Navajo family, of coarse the angles wings would have to be placed with his back against the wall. Also there is a goat ram and a sheep both painted with cloud designs. The human-like figures all have masks over their faces as they are Holy People and they all have turquoise jewelry even the sheep. This group of figurines is an unusually large, eloquently designed, stone polished, and painted that took much effort, time, risk, and experience to accomplish. This set is not as of yet been spoken though it won best of pottery classification at the Navajo Tribal Fair. If someone might be interested in purchasing this set or you know of someone who might be, please message us. Otherwise just take a look and enjoy.
