Luke 24:51—While he was blessing them, he left them and was taken up into heaven. Read todays devotion, A Reminder of What He Still Does, from Beside Quiet Waters, a devotion book that reminds today’s Christians that when life’s storms threaten to overcome us, the Lord promises to lead us to find peace. What was the last view those disciples had of their ascending Lord? Wasn’t it his hands lifted in blessing over them? How that sight must have stuck with them. When troubles arose, they needed only to recall his hands stretched over them in blessing. When temptations came, those same hands were there, always ready to strengthen them. The same was true with sorrow and suffering, danger and even death. Jesus was not off in a secluded heaven, unaware and unconcerned about them. He was holding his loving, living hands in blessing over them. No wonder they returned to Jerusalem with great joy. They knew what Jesus would still do for them. It’s easy for me to see his hands lifted in blessing when the sun shines brightly and my step is sprightly. In fact, in such days I may not even see his hands, to my shame, and may forget where my thanks belongs. But then come other days when his arms are extra visible and I cannot exist without them. Do you know of any days like that too? Did you think about those arms when you were wheeled into that operating room? When the lab report came back with news about cells not normal? When you’ve had to walk to the grave behind a loved one’s casket? When you rise to loneliness each day? What would I do without his blessing arms? Who else can hold me close and wipe away both my tears and my fears? Prayer: (CW 587:3) What confidence to be able to pray, “Lord Jesus, since you love me, Oh, spread your wings above me And shield me from alarm. Though Satan would assail me, Your mercy will not fail me; I rest in your protecting arm.” From Beside Quiet Waters: Daily Devotions for a Year, by Richard E.
