Luke 3:15-18 And as the people were in expectation, and all men - TopicsExpress

Luke 3:15-18 And as the people were in expectation, and all men mused in their hearts of John, whether he were the Christ, or not; John answered, saying unto them all, I indeed baptize you with water; but one mightier than I cometh, the latchet of whose shoes I am not worthy to unloose: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost and with fire: Whose fan is in his hand, and he will throughly purge his floor, and will gather the wheat into his garner; but the chaff he will burn with fire unquenchable. And many other things in his exhortation preached he unto the people. The masses often get confused! It is our own sinfulness and idolatry that will turn the “messenger” into a “celebrity”. We must never forget that the One we are to worship is “Superior” to all who simply proclaim His message. All of Jerusalem and Judea was being moved by the preaching of the unknown, “voice crying in the wilderness”, therefore many assumed he must be the Messiah. Alexander MacLaren, “The people were ready to rally round him if he would say that he was the coming deliverer. It was a real temptation, but his unmoved humility, he brushed it aside, and poured an effectual stream of cold water on the excitement….. Followers and disciples always seek to hoist their teacher higher than is fitting, however, if he is but a man, he has to damp down misdirected enthusiasm.”
