MALAWIAN PRESIDENT CANCELS MOZAMBIQUE TRIP DUE TO KILLER FLOODS Malawian President Prof. Arthur Peter Mutharika has cancelled a planned trip on Thursday to Mozambique due to the floods that have hit his country and killed 48 people so far and the government of Malawi has declared a State of Disaster in areas affected by floods. Mutharika was expected to travel to Mozambique tomorrow, Thursday January 15, 2015, to attend the inauguration of that country’s President elect, Filipe Nyusi. His Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Dr. George Chaponda who is already in Maputo will represent President Mutharika at the inauguration. The floods have affected Nsanje, Chikwawa, Phalombe Zomba; Blantyre, Chiradzulu, Thyolo, Mulanje, Balaka, Machinga, Mangochi, Ntcheu, Salima, Rumphi and Karonga districts. So far, it is estimated that 13,999 households (69,995 people) have been displaced by the floods and forty eight (48) people have lost their lives. The floods have also damaged a lot of hectares of crops, washed away livestock and damaged infrastructure such as roads and bridges. Assessment of the impact of the floods is a problem currently because most of the affected areas are inaccessible. The Malawi Defence Force have already been drafted to undertake rescue operations using boats.
