MANIFESTO FOR PUCSC ELECTIONS 2014 SFS recognises the following issues and problems prevailing in the campus and will struggle to get them resolved to build a healthy democratic and learning environment in the campus. • Women Cell: Activation and democratization of Women Cell on campus. The discrimination against girls is not hidden on campus premises but functioning of the Women Cell (which is necessary according to the Supreme Court judgment “Vishakha v. State of Rajasthan”) is not seen nowhere. Also it needs to be restructured to be a democratically elected body with participation of students. • Hostel Accommodation: Hostel accommodation is not sufficient. Many students suffer as they have to pay sky-high rents for rooms outside the campus. • Representation of students in the Senate: Senate is the decision making body of the university. Ironically students have no representation or space in decision making. (The Council President can sit in the senate meetings only as an observer.) • Problem of Language in Arts: In Arts faculty students can join a department and take up examination in any medium (language) but they don’t get proper notes, textbooks etc. Also they are not taught in their language. • Permanent Faculty: There is shortage of teachers/Permanent faculty in almost all departments. • Problem of Even Odd System for Reappear: Many departments have this even odd system for reappears. This means that if a student fails to clear an exam in odd semester (say 1st) then he is eligible to reappear in that exam only in next odd semester, (say 3rd). Similarly with even semesters. Students suffer as they have to wait for a year to clear that exam. • Problem of Credit System for promotion from B.Sc to M.Sc in the Integrated course: Although the Science Departments have the 5 year integrated course of B.Sc and M.Sc, still for promotion from B.Sc to M.Sc full credits are required, failing which students are not promoted. This criteria need to be relaxed. • Educational Trips, Workshops, WET Labs: o Proper Educational, Industrial trips and workshops should be organised for the all-around development of students. o Proper WET labs should be constructed where students and teachers can learn to use new advanced technological instruments. • Library Extension: o The seating capacity of the AC Joshi library is insufficient. o Also there is no reading hall in the South campus (25 sector). • Fee Structure: o Regularisation of Self-Financing courses. Since 2000, no regular course has been started by the University. Only self-financing courses have been started, which means the university or govt. doesn’t pay for the infrastructure, instead whole burden is put on students as fee-structures are sky-high. o Opposition to Fee-hike. Every year University increases various fees e.g. hostel, mess diets, courses fee. We have always and will always oppose and struggle against these fee-hikes. • Issues of Research Scholars o Minimum Scholarship: Once a student is registered as a research scholar with the university, he/she should be provided with minimum scholarships and other facilities. o Classes till Graduation: It should not be compulsory for the research scholars to teach classes of students pursuing their masters. They should be given sufficient time for their research. o Creation of database of research scholars: A database should be created of the various researches being carried out by the students and teachers in the university so that anybody could contact other for help or assistance. • Utilization of funds for helping meritorious needy students: The funds allocated to the students’ council shall be used for helping meritorious needy students in form of scholarships, books etc. • Opposition to Police & External Influence: The character of Police is quite notorious and it has been seen in last few years that whenever students raise voice for their rights, police is used to thrash them and suppress their voice. We oppose any such intervention of police and external influence which curbs the democratic voice and space of the students. • Council work according to feedback: Instead of pleasing authorities, the PUCSC should work to stand for students’ rights. For that our council will work according to the feedback obtained from the students. SFS APPEALS ALL TO VOTE AND SUPPORT US IN THE PUCSC ELECTIONS 2014 AND ALSO TO SUPPORT US FURTHER IN THE STRUGGLES. PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE: AMANDEEP KAUR CODE NO. 1
