MARK WALTERS admits to being nervous ahead of big games but you’d never have known it at Hampden on this day in 1990. The English winger scored a fine equaliser to take the League Cup final to extra time and ultimately set Rangers on the path to another trophy. Richard Gough’s extra time winner clinched the final piece of silverware in Graeme Souness’ reign as Rangers boss and Walters remembers it fondly despite the nerves. He said: “I used to get nervous before games and I think that was a good thing and before a big game like that there was a bit of trepidation. “You knew you had to put in a performance to get anything out of it but once the game gets going you get in to it. “With it being half and half in the stadium it was a great atmosphere and a memory that will never leave me. “For my goal Ally laid it off to me. I’d come off the wing and I just hit it first time. “I could use both feet well. Although I played on the left wing that was my weaker side, so it wasn’t a surprise to hit it with my right because that was the stronger of the two.” Winning any silverware was worthy of celebration but enjoying trophy success by beating Celtic in a final was always a bonus for Walters. He added: “When you play a game you went it to be open and competitive and you knew that would be the case when you played Celtic. It was always great to get one over them. “The celebrations are a bit blurry. We generally did things together though and we had a do at the club straight after before enjoying a few nightspots.” /james
