MARKS BEST MOVIE SONGS EVER (1955-99) COUNTDOWN ... NO. 268 A GIRL LIKE YOU--EDWYN COLLINS (#32, 1995, Empire Records) The one and only hit for Scottish-born Edwyn Collins (born August 23, 1959 in Edinburgh, Scotland) spent three weeks in the Top 40, peaking at No. 32. The song, which samples the famous drum beat of Len Berrys 1965 No. 2 hit 1-2-3, was aided by its inclusion in the motion picture Empire Records. The movie starred Anthony LaPaglia as an independent record store owner who leaves the place open for his closing person, played by Rory Cochrane, only to find out that LaPaglia is selling the store to a chain store as he closes the store for the night. To want to keep the store open, Cochrane goes to Atlantic City to try and build on the nights cash. He doesnt do well and has to devise a scheme to make up $9,000 ... and get the message out that the store is going to be independent no more. What follows is a frolic through the record store wonderland that involves all the employees, including those played by young and rising stars Liv Tyler and Renee Zellweger. Thoughts, memories? Enjoy!
